- Markina Mayor Maan Teodoro said that during her first week as mayor, they prioritized visiting the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) facility to inspect all available assets and ensure readiness for the ongoing rainy season.
Mayor Maan Teodoro said on Wednesday, July 9, that the local government is prepared for the rainy season, with continuous dredging in the Marikina River and ongoing drainage declogging operations to ensure the proper flow of water and prevent flooding.
Teodoro said that during her first week as mayor, they prioritized visiting the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) facility to inspect all available assets and ensure readiness for the ongoing rainy season.
“Handa naman tayo. Nung nakaraang linggo, actually, umuulan-ulan na kaya talagang pinagtuunan natin ng pansin ‘yan (We’re prepared. Just last week, it was already starting to rain, so we really focused on that),” she said.
The mayor added that Marikina has been very resilient when it comes to storms and typhoons, saying they already know what to do but still need to regularly check their equipment.
To ensure residents’ safety, Teodoro said that dredging operations in the Marikina River are ongoing to maintain its carrying capacity and handle large volumes of water during heavy rains.
She also mentioned the ongoing project with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which includes slope protection works. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve flood control strategies in the Pasig-Marikina and Cagayan River basins.
“Pero habang ginagawa ‘yun, napalapad na natin yung ilog natin ng 100 meters, which is the ideal width of the river para makayanan yung malaking volume ng tubig kapag umuulan na nangangaling sa upstream (While doing that, we’ve already widened our river by 100 meters, which is the ideal width to accommodate the large volume of water coming from upstream during heavy rains),” the mayor stated.
In addition, drainage declogging continues citywide as part of maintenance efforts to prevent flooding and prepare for any calamities.
The mayor said, “Kahit na hindi umaapaw yung ilog natin, kapag yung drainage system natin ay hindi declog ng maayos, talagang lahat babahain (Even if our river does not overflow, if our drainage system is not properly declogged, the entire area will still experience flooding).”
She assured residents that the local government continues to monitor weather updates through Marikina 161 and is prepared to respond to any emergencies during the rainy season.
