Mariel Container Terminal Focuses on Efficiency and Safety

Posted on May 15, 2018

The Container Terminal of the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM), of Cuba, seeks to become a reference entity for the transshipment of merchandise in the region.

The terminal is located at 45 km west of Havana, within the industrial park, whose authorities address the strategies to attract investors to the country, through incentives such as the exemption from the payment of customs duties.

A tour around these port facilities reveals that, since its inauguration in 2014, investments to extend its dock, roads and the dredging of the bay have continued.

This last action will allow the entry to that port of ships of greater size than those previously received, for example the so-called Postpanamax, of 335 m in length.

There is an average of 26 movements per crane per hour, so if a ship demands 1,000 movements and is provided with two cranes, in 24 hours the handling operations end.
