MARAD awards $280 million in Port Infrastructure Grants

Posted on February 20, 2020

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Maritime Administration (MARAD) last week announced that it has awarded more than $280 million in discretionary grant funding through the new Port Infrastructure Development Program.

The Port Infrastructure Development Program supports efforts by ports and industry stakeholders to improve facility and freight infrastructure to ensure that national freight transportation needs, present and future, are met. The program provides capital financing and project management assistance to improve port capacity and efficiency.

The program could prove to be a short-lived one. As part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2019, Congress authorized $292.73 million for the program, to remain available until expended. However, there is no request for further funding for it in the FY 2021 MARAD budget request (see earlier story).
