Manson Construction retrofits cutter suction dredge

Posted on October 14, 2024

This past summer, Manson Construction Co. undertook a substantial retrofit of the cutter suction dredge H.R. MORRIS.

The dredge was towed to our Seattle yard, where Manson’s highly skilled yard crew and marine equipment experts removed the main pump, A.C. wound rotor motor, and liquid rheostat and installed the latest dredge pump and dredge pump drive technology.

The new system includes 6,000hp A.C. permanent magnet motors with state-of-the-art variable frequency drives that power a GIW pump—Manson worked with Hagler Systems to select the new pump.

These upgrades will enhance the dredge’s performance capabilities and reduce emissions by more than 30% while powered by our onboard diesel generators.

The H.R. MORRIS remains among a small group of electric dredges that can produce zero diesel emissions by plugging into shoreside power, bolstering green practices and sustainable energy.

Manson would like to thank Affinity, Phase Motion Controls, and Hagler Systems, Inc. for contributing to this significant undertaking.

The new system was tested last week in the Seattle Yard. In the coming weeks, the H.R. MORRIS will depart for California.

Great job, everyone!
