Dredging Contractors of America’s Manson Construction Company, and Kiewit, are receiving the honors for their joint removal of the old San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB). Completed 12 months ahead of schedule and with a cost saving of $20 million, the 19-month-long project demolished 15 foundations of the old SFOBB, including two concrete caissons and 13 concrete piers supported on timber pile. The underwater portions of the piers were removed through explosive blasting which required extensive coordination with multiple stakeholders and working within strict environmental permit restrictions. With detailed and extensive planning, the project team was able to reduce the number of blast events from 15 to 8.

The Marvin M. Black Partnering Excellence Award (represented by a category within the JLT Build America Awards) is presented annually to construction project(s) that epitomize the principles of partnering. Inspired by AGC’s Past President Marvin M. Black, the inclusion of partnering into the Build America Awards represents a timely and unified celebration of the construction industry’s finest. Contractors honored with this award stand out for their ability in the following areas:

  • Signing a formal partnering charter
  • Achieving a common goal
  • Honoring all stake holders
  • Resolving Conflict
  • Improving communication on the project with all audiences
  • Incorporating team-building activities
