West Maui boaters can expect some activity at the Māla Boat Ramp starting next week, but with minimal disruption expected. The Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) has confirmed that American Marine Corporation will begin dredging operations designed to clear out sediment from the entrance channel to maintain access for vessels. According to a recent Department of Land and Natural Resources announcement, the work is set to kick off on Monday and run through late September, an endeavor with a price tag of just over $1 million.
The ramp, a crucial access point for west Maui users, especially now with Lahaina Harbor under reconstruction, is expected to remain open for users. Although, there may be occasional interruptions. To make sure the impact is as slight as possible, the dredging contractor will coordinate with local water goers. “We recognize the importance Māla Ramp has to west Maui users, especially with Lahaina Harbor closed for rebuilding, and we want to thank the users for their patience while DOBOR worked on funding and regulatory approvals to get this project started,” DOBOR Administrator Meghan Statts said, according to the DLNR’s post.
Funding for the project comes courtesy of the state legislature and was expedited by the Governor to kickstart the much-needed maintenance. This dredging project is not just a response to natural sediment buildup but a proactive measure to keep this vital piece of infrastructure functional and accessible for boaters, fishers, and other ocean enthusiasts in the area.
The contractor’s efforts to liaison with ramp users are a testament to the balancing act between necessary upkeep and maintaining daily operations. “We also want to thank the legislature for providing the funding and the Governor for working quickly to release the funding,” Statts told DLNR.
