The Danish shipping signed a three-year deal with Sri Lanka Ports Authority to continue using the Port of Colombo as its regional hub.

Maersk Line has inked a three-year terminal service agreement with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

The agreement will see Maersk continuing to utilise SLPA’s terminals at the Port of Colombo for its regional shipping operations.

SLPA said the agreement was expected to pave the way for stronger collaboration with the world’s second largest container line.

“Officials from both sides highlighted that the agreement will not only ensure greater service reliability but also contribute to long term growth prospects with the upcoming Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT) development,” a statement from the port authority said.

CECT is expected to “significantly enhance” capacity and efficiency at the Port of Colombo according to SLPA.
