Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry last week met with terminal operator Ports America CEO Matthew Leech and Terminal Investment Ltd. (TiL) CEO Ammar Kanaan to discuss progress on the Port of New Orleans‘ $1.8 billion Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) project.
Led by the port in partnership with Ports America and TiL, the LIT project is designed to strengthen Louisiana’s multimodal infrastructure, expand port capacity and unlock access to inland markets, Ports America officials said in a press release.
Located in St. Bernard Parish, the terminal will offer connections to rail, road and river systems. The project is expected to generate thousands of construction and permanent jobs and increase global trade in Louisiana. Construction on the LIT is expected to begin by the end of 2025.
“For generations, Louisiana’s prosperity has been driven by trade, and this project secures our place as an economic powerhouse for generations to come,” said Landry.
When completed, the LIT will be able to handle the largest container vessels that traverse the Panama Canal locks, which will dramatically increase Louisiana’s import and export capacity and allow container-on-barge and intermodal services to expand, port officials have said.
