Locals Hope Third Time’s the Charm for Strathmere Beach Replenishment

A dredge from Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company continued to pump sand onto Strathmere’s north end over the weekend before moving out of the area in anticipation of a costal storm this week. The work marks the third time the company has replenished beaches in Strathmere as part of a federally-funded U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project.

“As they do these projects, before they leave a project area they want the project to be complete,” township engineer Paul Dietrich said at the Monday, Feb. 8 meeting of Upper Township Committee.

Dietrich said the dredge will return soon and pump again until Strathmere beaches have a sufficient amount of sand. The Army Corps of Engineers has a template that it builds each beach to that is meant to sustain it until the next nourishment. Strathmere and Sea Isle City are set to receive nourishment projects every five years under a 50-year agreement with the Army Corps.
