Legislators Call on Feds to Mitigate Erosion in Camp Ellis

Two Maine legislators try and find a solution after significant erosion at Camp Ellis. They are proposing an emergency bill to force congress into approving money to fix the issue.

“This is something they’ve had to deal with for decades and it’s time that it ends,” Senator Justin Chenette from Saco said.

The Saco jetty was built in the late 1800’s to help ships in the Saco River, but it’s been blamed for causing erosion for years. In 2007 the federal government started a plan to fix the issue, but congress never approved the 27 million dollars in funding.

“We’re looking at potentially 10’s of millions of dollars in beach replenishment that is needed over the course of the lifespan of the project which is about a 50 year project,” Senator Chenette said.
