Lee County commissioners on March 3 approved two measures to restore coastal areas damaged by Hurricane Ian. The board authorized a $245,800 contract with EarthBalance Corp. to build a 10-foot-wide dune planted with native vegetation along about 2 miles of beach at Lovers Key and Bonita Beach. Work is expected to begin in April. Commissioners also approved transferring more than $2.1 million in Tourist Development Tax reserves to help fund construction of a fishing pier at Lighthouse Beach Park in Sanibel. Federal Emergency Management Agency funding of $145,844 also will support the pier project.
