Lee County beaches receive funding for shoreline recovery projects

Posted on October 19, 2023

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The State and FEMA secured $23 million for the Sanibel Hurricane Ian Beach Recovery and Resilience Project to restore the island’s beaches affected by Hurricane Ian.

According to the City of Sanibel, crews will be dumping 400,000 tons of sand and replenishing shorelines from the lighthouse south of Bowman’s Beach, starting November 15.

The sand dropping will address washouts that emerged during the storm surge, restoring the beach profile to its pre-hurricane condition.

Once the contractor is selected, the final implementation plan will be developed. Click here to view the City Council project update from Tuesday, October 3.

To accomplish this, they are requesting a voluntary one-time Temporary Beach Management and Access Easement from each of the island’s Gulf-front property owners.

The City mailed communication concerning the needed easement to each Gulf-front parcel owner on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
