Learn About Gowanus Canal Cleanup At Town Hall Thursday Night

Posted on November 16, 2017

The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group (CAG) is hosting a town hall this Thursday, November 16, to let the public know what the canal cleanup will entail, the timeline, and what to expect.

Designated a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2010, the multi-year cleanup began recently with preliminary test-dredging at the Fourth Street Basin. Dredging will continue in December when workers will dig up sediment from the floor of the Basin, located behind Whole Foods, and then cap the bottom to prevent other toxins from flowing in. The dredging process is expected to take two months, followed by the capping process. The Fourth Street Basin project is expected to be completed by April 2018.

Thursday’s town hall meeting will offer attendees a preview of what to expect in the coming months and years. Congress Woman Nydia Velázquez will give a keynote address and the EPA will present an overview and timeline for the project. Attendees will be able to ask questions about the project during a Q&A session following the presentation.
