Largest Vessel Yet Calls into Pipavav

Posted on July 6, 2017

The 10,100 teu capacity Maersk Gibraltar arrived at APM Terminals Pipavav on June 16th, marking both the first call of Maersk Line’s ME1 service to the facility, and setting a new record for the largest vessel ever to call Pipavav port. The 337m long container ship loaded cargoes of refrigerated agricultural products, and iron castings for export.

The newly-added weekly loop, linking Europe, the Middle East and India, provides direct connections between Pipavav, on India’s West Coast, and the ports of Salalah, Jeddah, Port Tangier, Felixstowe, Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Rotterdam, Algeciras, Aqaba, and Jebel Ali in the UAE.

A significant expansion at APM Terminal Pipavav was recently completed, strengthening the existing berth, through additional dredging, along with three new post-Panamax cranes to accommodate ultra-large container ships, and four new RTGs. This investment has increased Pipavav’s annual throughput capacity to 1.35 million teu. Container throughput at the port was 682,000 teu in 2016, along with approximately 3 million tons of bulk cargo.
