Large dredging pipe spotted floating off Myrtle Beach coast

Posted on January 12, 2026

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A large dredging pipe was spotted floating just off the Myrtle Beach coast Wednesday, sparking online speculation about exactly what the object was.

Myrtle Beach Police spokesman Randolph Angotti told News13 the object belonged to a dredging company, and tugboats were set to collect it around 4 p.m.

City officials said the 500-foot-long dredging pipe fell off a barge en route to North Myrtle Beach as part of an ongoing renourishment project.

Work began in North Myrtle Beach in December. The final reach, covering Garden City and Surfside Beach, is expected to begin in April 2026.

In December 2024, the Charleston District awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company to place two million cubic yards of material on Myrtle Beach, equivalent to 200,000 dump trucks, along 26 miles of coastline. The renourishment is funded entirely by the Corps of Engineers and will cost $72 million.

A News13 crew is headed to the scene.
