ABOUT 10,000 cubic metres of sand dredged from around Lancelin Jetty has been used to widen a nearby beach prone to erosion.

The Department of Transport’s maritime executive director Steve Jenkins said the $600,000, three-month project was finished on time and on budget with help from the community.

“More than 10,000 cubic metres of sand was dredged from the channels, and most of it was deposited on Grace Darling Beach south of the jetty,” Mr Jenkins said.

“The additional sand will widen the beach enhancing the enjoyment of the area by the local community and visitors this spring.

“The work was undertaken in close consultation with the Shire of Gingin.”

The total amount of sand dredged was lower than the estimated 15,000 cubic metres when works started in April, however the department confirmed it did not need to dredge as much to get the required depths

Most of the sand was used to widen Grace Darling beach, which has been subject to severe erosion in recent years, with a small amount used on the beach north of the jetty as well.

The project team acknowledged the cooperation of skippers and beachgoers who abided by safety arrangements implemented for the dredging and sand replenishment works.
