Lake Michigan beach will get extra sand from dredging project

Dredged sand and water from the Black River channel in Lake Michigan is pumped onto South Beach in South Haven. A dredging operation happening in June 2025 will add sand to the nearby public beach.

SOUTH HAVEN, MI — Dredging operations are set to begin at the outer harbor of the South Haven pier heads, adding sand to a nearby public beach, the city of South Haven reports.

The work is scheduled to finish within the next week, weather permitting, the city said on Tuesday, June 24.

Sand will be added to South Beach for beach nourishment during the dredging operation, the news release states.

The work is being done to reopen the navigable channel for maritime traffic, protect the shoreline, improve resilience and enhance public enjoyment of the beach, the city said.

Pero Marine will carry put the work on the water and on shore.

Dredging equipment, cranes, barges and other vessels will be in the water and heavy machinery will operate on shore at South Beach.

Truck traffic will be present along Water Street and at South Beach.
