Lake District Voters Approve Dredging Project

Posted on February 8, 2016

Residents around Lake Altoona vote to move forward with a $1.4 million project to dredge several parts of the lake.

Only two people voted “no” to the plan to remove more than 12,000 truckloads of sand from several areas of the lake.

The Lake District says by removing the sediment now, Lake district tax payers will save a large amount of money.

That’s because Lake Altoona is drawn down 9 feet now for repairs to the dam

“The financial savings to the district are enormous. If we were to try and do this project hydraulically the difference would be four to five times more. This project is 100% funded by the tax payers that border the lake,” Lake District board chairman Paul Johnson said.

Lake District leaders expect dredging site preparations to begin as early as next week. They expect dredging to begin by mid-February, after DNR permits gain approval.
