The Hot Springs Village lakes department has begun mechanically dredging Lake Balboa coves.
Much of the work focuses on the areas where sediment has accumulated the most, like areas where water flows into the lake.
Lakes ecology and fisheries manager Brad Meredith, along with his assistants Katy Harmon and Brian Cappel, make up the workforce for this time-consuming work.
Once areas are located where skid steers can get to a cove, the work begins, as the equipment goes in and out many times removing the sediment from the lake floor. Some areas have muck up to a foot deep, or more, but in some areas, only inches of sediment has been deposited.
When removed, the sediment is piled on common property in areas where Meredith has determined it will not wash back into the lake.
Hydraulic dredging will also be taking place later this year, with the plan for this dredging to be done before Memorial Day.
