KONGSBERG to Detail the ‘Digital Ocean’ at Oceanology International 2018

Posted on March 12, 2018

Kongsberg Maritime’s Oceanology International 2018 (Oi18) stand (D600) will be dedicated to the “Digital Ocean”, a concept that harmonises data flow and processing from the seabed to the office. The Digital Ocean is enabled by the combination of KONGSBERG’s leading underwater technology for the collection of data, the interconnectivity to distribute the data and the final digital and cloud-based foundation to analyse it.

KONGSBERG’s Digital Ocean integrates the entire journey that data takes from the seabed to the office, resulting in a single ecosystem for more efficient, lower cost and improved operational performance. Oi18 visitors will see how connecting the different phases, from the operational phases of data collection, to distribution and analysis can enable cost-reductions and new efficiency levels, while improving performance and accuracy for diverse applications, including offshore and shallow-water survey, all areas of marine research, subsea intervention, underwater construction and aquaculture.

Digital Ocean starts at the data collection phase with KONGSBERG’s extensive portfolio of subsea technology solutions, many of which will be on show during Oi18. KONGSBERG’s hydroacoustic and subsea positioning technology is already well proven to deliver high accuracy and deep functionality, resulting in the collection of high quality data, from the seafloor to just below the surface. Making the best possible use of vessel time is critical to efficient data collection. KONGSBERG instruments are developed for simplicity and flexibility, while the integration of disparate technologies into autonomous platforms makes operations in even more remote places possible.

Distributing high quality data quickly and securely is vital to ensure that the right decisions can be made by experts on shore. KONGSBERG solutions including underwater modems and transponders, and ship to shore networks powered by the unique Maritime Broadband Radio (MBR) technology, enable fast and low-latency data transfer, with no airtime costs to send any amount of data.

Once data has been distributed, KONGSBERG’s cloud technology empowers data specialists to perform rapid analysis of results and quickly make decision on the go. Through cloud-based working, onshore personnel can view data and interact with other domain experts to provide additional information using a platform that not only increases resource utilisation, but also enables innovation and knowledge sharing. Efficiency gains are high, when on shore teams can guide and assist multiple survey projects from a central location. KONGSBERG’s Kognifai digital platform provides the data ecosystem for innovative analysis and processing tools.

“The many components of the Digital Ocean concept are all well-established, but the complete integration and harmonisation of the data from the seabed to the office is entirely new,” said Sören Themann, Vice President Sales – Subsea, Kongsberg Maritime. “State of the art cloud technology, like the Kognifai digital platform, provides the central point of access and enables KONGSBERG to offer a holistic approach with huge operational and efficiency benefits. KONGSBERG is constantly adding more operational technology and software to the Kognifai digital platform. In combination with specialised third party solutions, KONGSBERG will help our customers and partners to create the Digital Ocean.”

As a world-leading manufacturer of marine electronics and underwater instrumentation, Kongsberg Maritime will showcase its latest products for the subsea environment, including seabed mapping, cameras, AUVs and underwater acoustic positioning at Oi18. A highlight from the Digital Ocean will be a technology demonstration featuring live operations from the Norwegian coast using the ground-breaking MBR solution.
