Kitty Hawk will Get an Early Sample of Beach Nourishment

Posted on June 29, 2017

While it’s going to be August before the Kitty Hawk portion of this year’s beach nourishment project officially begins, a small part of the town’s oceanfront will be widened soon.

The sand will come from the subline at Helga Street in Kill Devil Hills, and as much as 2,000 feet of beach into Kitty Hawk up to White Street could be widened in the coming weeks.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock is now about 500 feet south of the town line, and part of the beach east of Sibbern Street is closed.

The contractor plans on pumping into Kitty Hawk from the existing subline at Helga Street and estimates it will head 1,000 and 2,000 feet into Kitty Hawk.

The rest of Kitty Hawk, then part of Southern Shores will receive sand once the Kill Devil Hills project is done. Sand pumping is currently taking place just south of milepost 5.

Meanwhile in Duck, the dune between Sprigtail and Pintail Drive is almost finished, and the overall project there is nearing completion. A final briefing on the Duck portion will be held Thursday at the Duck Town Hall.
