Holland-based King Company received a contract to dredge material from Grand Haven’s outer harbor.
The Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded the contract to the company, according to a news release.
More than $208,000 will be used to dredge 35,000 cubic yards of material from the harbor and put it near the shore for beach nourishment. Dredging is expected to be complete by mid-July.
Lt. Col. Dennis Sugrue, district engineer for the Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said in a statement the Grand Haven harbor facilitates vessels that carry important commodities.
“We are proud of our partnership and mission to aid commercial navigation in that area,” he said.
In 2014, the most recent year when numbers are available, Grand Haven Harbor reached 722,000 tons of material shipped or received.
Grand Haven is a federally designated harbor of refuge and home to the Grand Haven Station sector of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains a navigation system of 91 harbors and four connecting channels, including the channels that join lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan, St. Clair and Superior.
