Sand dredged from the Kihei Boat Ramp harbor has been delivered to Kamaole Beach Park I in this photo taken Feb. 18. The sand had been stored in the upper parking lot at the boat ramp from July to November, over the course of the dredging project. The approximately 4,500 yards of sand was moved over three days, with the park and dunes receiving about 100 truckloads a day. The nourishment project builds the dune’s protection potential against storm events or sea level rise.
This area at Kamaole Beach Park I, shown Monday, was cleared, fenced and to be planted with native pohuehue plants in April. Seeds and plants were harvested earlier from the dunes and propagated by Anna Palomino at Hoolawa Farms in Haiku.
