Kaplan city crews are cleaning and dredging the Sledge Canal. Trash build-up caused part of the city to flood in August.
John Carbaugh a Kaplan City Councilman says,”There’s a lot of people who were displaced because of the floods probably about 30 to 40 families maybe even more.”
The city of Kaplan is partnering with the Coule Dejean Drainage Board in an effort to get the water flowing again in the Sledge Canal.
Carbaugh says, “It was plugged up. there was a lot of debris, underbrush, overgrowth that was plugging up the canal and making it flow backward.”
The city will use heavy equipment to dredge out the debris, as well as some of the dirt in an effort to ease the minds of residents after August’s flood.
“I received phone calls the last time it rained really hard. I received a couple of phone calls from people who were very concerned who were concerned we would have flooding again and your heart goes out to them because. You hear it in there voice. You hear the stress and how much it put’s on them.”
Officials are hoping to complete the project by late spring or early summer.
