With our offshore vessel Kamara, Boskalis has started a new identification and clearance campaign for unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the UK sector of the North Sea. The development of Ørsted‘s offshore wind farm Hornsea 3 will require potential explosive objects to be located and thoroughly investigated in the coming weeks.
During World War II, many explosive devices, such as mines, ended up in the bed of the North Sea without detonating. Now, some 80 years later, this UXO is found as part of the development and construction of offshore wind farms. For several years, the Kamara has been deployed by our colleagues at Boskalis Hirdes EOD Services to identify and, if necessary, neutralize UXO, literally paving the way for the development of offshore wind farms, including Ørsted’s Hornsea 1 and Hornsea 2. In the case of Ørsted’s Hornsea 3, this is a 2.9 GW offshore wind farm that will provide green power for more than 3.3 million homes in the United Kingdom.
And so, our UXO flagship Kamara plays a vital role in facilitating the energy transition and the development of offshore renewable energy projects. We wish the crew of the Kamara and the project team good luck with the execution of this project.
