Kaibo Public Beach Park temporarily closed for beach replenishment

Posted on September 11, 2024

Kaibo Public Beach Park will be temporarily closed to the public for beach replenishment and infrastructure upgrades starting Monday.

The Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure announced the closure Friday evening, saying it was necessary to ensure public safety while the “essential beach replenishment works and critical infrastructural improvements” are carried out.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Jay Ebanks, through a press release, said, the upgrades to Kaibo Public Beach Park will transform the “beloved space” into a more functional and enjoyable destination for all residents and visitors.

“While temporary closures may be inconvenient, the long-term benefits of a restored coastline, modernised amenities, and enhanced infrastructure will make the park even better than before. We are excited for the community to enjoy these new facilities soon,” Ebanks said.

The boat launch ramp at the park will remain open during the closure as its use will not be affected by the ongoing works.

No timeline was provide for the completion of the works, including the reconstruction phase.

The release said one will be shared with the public “as soon as further details are available”.

Phased works

The initial phase of works, which commences next week, also includes site preparation activities, ensuring a safe and secure environment while improvements are made.

The preliminary works will not include the full reconstruction or coastal enhancement phase but will focus on setting the groundwork for future upgrades, the release stated.

It includes establishing a security fence to prevent public access to the site for public safety, demolition of the wooden cabanas and other wooden structures, including the vendor stall, and base fill work for the internal road within the park to raise its overall height by several inches.

Chip and spraying of the park’s internal road will also be done.

“During this period, all amenities at the park will be unavailable, including the cabanas and bathroom facilities, with the exception of the launch ramp, which will remain operational,” the release added.

Once completed, Kaibo Public Beach Park will feature new cabanas, a restored and replenished coastline, refurbished or new bathroom facilities, groynes (breakwaters) to prevent future beach erosion and improved parking facilities.

“The Ministry is committed to ensuring these improvements enhance the park’s functionality and enjoyment for all,” the release said, adding that it thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation.

“We look forward to unveiling a revitalized Kaibo Public Beach Park [in the near future],” it added.
