John Holland Wins $174M Contract for Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion

Posted on March 6, 2018

Australian contractor John Holland has secured a contract worth A$225 million ($174 million) to build a new runway at the Sunshine Coast Airport located in Queensland, Australia.

Under the terms of the contract, which was awarded by Sunshine Coast Council, John Holland will construct a new 2,450m x 45m main runway.

The new runway will be designed by Beca Consultants and referred to as Runway 13/31 (RWY 13/31).

The project, which is scheduled to be completed by 2020, also includes on-site environmental offsets, a perimeter road and significant drainage channels.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said: “The new runway will accommodate larger, more fuel-efficient aircraft and open up direct access for the Sunshine Coast to more Australian cities, international markets in Asia and the Western Pacific and in turn, drive significant economic growth.

“The entire project will cost around A$303 million ($235 million), including design, environmental offsets and works undertaken so far.”

“The Airport Expansion project will contribute A$4.1 billion to the local economy over the period to 2040, generate around 2,230 jobs in our community, help boost tourism, enable visitors from many locations to gain direct access to the region and support our local export businesses – particularly those operating in the food and agribusiness sectors – to access new markets.”

John Holland will assume control of the project site over the next couple of weeks to start preparing it for dredging works, which are set to commence in the middle of this year.

According to the latest estimates, the entire project will cost around A$303 million ($235 million), including design, environmental offsets and works undertaken so far.

The Australian Government and the Queensland Treasury Corporation are supporting the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport through grants.
