JN Port Starts Dredging Programme Process

Posted on August 16, 2016

India’s leading container gateway, JN Port, is getting Phase 2 of its dredging programme underway, which will take the depth of its existing 33.54km long navigation channel from 14m to 15m. This investment will allow larger container vessels up to 12, 500 teu capacity, to be handled at the port, and will facilitate vessel manoeuvring in the port.

The project will be completed within a period of 24 months, the port authority states. A project management consultancy contract has been award to Tata Consultancy Engineering.

Container volumes at JNPT continue to increase. In July the port handled over 381,000 teu, 1.25% higher than in July 2015. JNPCT, the port authority-owned container terminal, handled over 127,000 teu, a jump of more than 16%. Both vessel waiting times and gross berth productivity were improved compared with the equivalent period of the last year, JNPT notes.
