In North Wildwood, a bad storm often spells beach destruction — large chunks of sand claimed by the ocean, reshaping the tourist town’s shoreline.
In recent years, local officials have repeatedly taken emergency actions to fix the damage, which threatens public safety and the city’s economic livelihood.
But those quick fixes were done without proper permission, according to the state. The work also wrecked natural dunes and wetlands that serve as important protection for the city.
Earlier this month, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued two violations to the Cape May County city for a bevy of unauthorized construction that broke five of the state’s environmental laws.
