Jan De Nul: Building the infrastructure that will store CO₂ beneath the North Sea

Saipem is responsible for the offshore execution scope of the project. For Jan De Nul it is the first time we are involved in a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project that captures CO₂ emissions from industrial facilities before they enter the atmosphere. The CO₂ is compressed and transported through a network of pipelines to a storage location under the North Sea, where it is injected thousands of metres deep into porous rock formations.

Installing rock to protect pipelines

Northern Endurance Partnership will capture CO₂ from the industrial areas of Teesside and Humber, on the east coast of England. We are responsible for protecting the pipeline, which has a diameter of one metre, on the seabed of the North Sea. Using our rock installation vessel Simon Stevin, we will install rock over the coming months. We do this with a vertical fall pipe system that places the rock with high precision on the seabed at depths of 30 to 60 metres.
