We’re working hard at Interstate Island — an island in the Duluth-Superior Harbor. Over the past 5 years, rising water has drowned out half of the island, threatening a critical nesting site of the already #endangered common tern.
The project’s objective is to make more space for the gulls on the island, hoping that the gulls will then allow the tern population on the island to thrive (rather than continuing to take over their habitat).
It’s a bit of a gamble, but it’s an important one as biologists and the DNR try to save the last of the terns in Minnesota.
