J.E. McAmis Wraps up Clean-up and Sand Capping at Astoria Marine Construction Company (AMCCO) Site:

J.E. McAmis, Inc., has completed pile removal and in water sand capping of the Astoria Marine Construction Company (AMMCO) site in Astoria, OR. The site was contaminated with hazardous chemicals from historical ship manufacturing and repair operations. Contamination was in soil on the property and in nearby riverbed sediment in the Lewis and Clark River near the mouth of the Columbia River.

Background — AMCCO began to manufacture and repair wooden-hulled fishing and ferryboats, tugboats, and yachts in 1924. During World War II, the shipyard expanded operations for the construction of military vessels. During the Korean and Vietnam wars, the company built wooden-hulled minesweepers and submarine chasers and refurbished older warships. During the peak production period from 1940 to 1960, the facility employed more than 400 full-time workers. In the 1960s, work for the U.S. Navy decreased and operations transitioned to fishing and tugboat repair. After 1985, the business primarily involved repairs of fishing boats.

Great job to the J.E. McAmis crew who made this happen!
