The Isla Blanca Park Beach Renourishment Project is underway and is expected to begin on Friday, July 7, 2023. This project is in partnership with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Texas General Land Office, and the City of South Padre Island.
Currently, the City of South Padre Island is completing their renourishment project where approximately 283,000 cubic yards of beach quality sand is being placed in the areas of Access 23 to Access 18 inside its city limits.
Cameron County is estimated to receive approximately 94,000 cubic yards of beach quality sand to be placed at Isla Blanca Park between the jetties and Sandpiper Pavilion, adding to the restoration, renourishment, and beautification the beach and its access areas in South Padre Island, Texas.
“This is an exciting project we’re pleased to announce. Many thanks to our federal and state agencies involved, and the City of South Padre Island as this grand partnership yields to a long-term benefit of our coastal beaches, the continued protection of our dune system, area wildlife, endangered species, habitat, and park infrastructure. This project will restore the erosion that took place due to recent storms, and will help mitigate that of any future activity,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.
“I want to thank the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Texas General Land Office, and the City of South Padre Island for their partnership on this great project. This project will provide a wider and healthier beach for our visitors to enjoy and will help protect the beach at Isla Blanca Park against coastal erosion,” stated Cameron County Commissioner Pct. 1 Sofia C. Benavides.
“Beach renourishment projects are of significant importance to our area. This project ensures that our beaches and infrastructure remain resilient after storms and any inclement weather events. This project will allow for our beautiful beaches to remain safe and enjoyable for our residents and visitors. Thank you, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Texas General Land Office, and the City of South Padre Island for the partnership and dedication to this important project,” stated Cameron County Parks & Recreation Director Joe E. Vega.
