The sand we spread our towels on in visits to the Delaware beach towns was once at the bottom of the sea, before engineers pumped it onto the shoreline in a wave of beach replenishment projects.
That work has gone on so long that scientists have acquired good guesses of just how much available sand is within the 3-mile line of the Delaware coast, in state waters — as well as how much could be used from federal waters more than 3 miles from shore.
Is it enough sand to keep rebuilding beaches in perpetuity?
