A dredging project off of Fort Myers Beach is complete a week early, saving thousands of taxpayer dollars — all thanks to Hurricane Irma.
The project along the Big Carlos Pass was meant to create an easier passage through the channel for boats.
Crews said they had to move their equipment right before the hurricane hit, and when they came back the job was done.
“The water moving back and fourth from Irma moved materials and kept the channel clean,” said Justin McBride, executive director of West Coast Inland Navigation District.
There was concern that workers would have to spend even longer on the project because of the hurricane, but the storm saved a minimum of $22,000 for taxpayers.
The hurricane also helped other dredging projects and channels along Southwest Florida beaches.
