Int’l Conference on Maritime, Logistic Sector from Tuesday

The shipping ministry is set to organise a two-day international conference on maritime and logistic sector to encourage local and foreign investments and new technologies in the waterways sector.

The South Asia Maritime and Logistic Forum 2018 conference will be held between October 9 and October 10 at Hotel Le Méridien in Dhaka, said officials.

Shipping minister Shajahan Khan announced the news at a press conference held at the secretariat on Sunday.

Government officials and experts on waterways trade and industry from about 20 countries are scheduled to join the conference.

Shipping ministry secretary Md Abdus Samad said the conference is aimed at making local industrialists and businesspeople aware about the current situation and the prospect of trade in the maritime and logistic sector from regional and international perspectives.

Shipping minister said the Bangladeshi sailors, engineers and pilots earned a huge amount of foreign currency and are playing a crucial role in the national life.

The ruling Awami League significantly developed Chattogram, Mongla and Payra ports and acquired dredgers, ferries and ships, he said.

The international conference will be held at the behest of the shipping ministry and will be supported by Indian organisation Getway Media Private Limited and Sri Lankan organisation Colombo Maritime Conference Events.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the conference at 4:00pm on October 9, with ministers and senior officials also participating in the programme.

Senior government officials, traders and industrialists from countries including USA, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Nepal and Bhutan are also expected to join the programme.

In the conference discussions will be held on development and investment possibility in waterways sector, obstacles and solutions for South Asian regional trading, dredging, shipbuilding and ports, potential sectors for flourish as well as regional connectivity.

The press conference was attended, among others, by department of shipping director general Commodore Syed Ariful Islam.
