Mo i Rana, the closest town to the Arctic Circle recently completed a dredging project to enable larger cruise ships to berth at its Toraneskaia facility.

Situated in the heart of Norway, one hour south from the Arctic Circle boundary and one hour by road to the Swedish border, Mo i Rana has dredged the Toraneskaia berth near the two centre extending the depth alongside from 6.5mtr to 11mtr.

Funded by the Norwegian government the dredging cost was around NKr30m (€2.6m) reports Oystein Lorentzen, finance manager at Cruise Norway member port Mo i Rana Havn.

The town can welcome cruise ships year-round due to a sheltered position with a  300mtr long quay with depths sloping out to 11mtr. There are 21 bollards, 15 up to 50 tons and 6 bollards up to 20 tons along the quay.

Industrial heritage and nature

Located 235 km south of Bodø, 480 km north of Trondheim, and a one-hour drive from the Swedish border the surrounding region offers a wealth of tourist attractions.

In 1946 Norway chose Mo i Rana  as the site for the construction of a major ironworks, shaping its industrial heritage and growth. Today, industry remains the backbone of the city’s economy, supported by a vast expanse of natural features, including numerous caves and proximity to Svartisen – Norway’s second-largest glacier.

Moholmen, the historic district of the town has houses dating back to the 18th century and the area is a living museum of the era prior to industrialisation. It has a long history as an iron ore mining town dating back to the 19th century.

Additionally, close ties with Sweden over generations have fostered strong cross-border collaborations and opportunity to experience two countries in a single tour showcasing their distinct traditions and cultures.

Increased activity

In the past five years the port has been welcoming one to two cruise ships a year but Lorentzen is hoping now the infrastructure work is completed cruise lines will consider adding Mo I Rana to their itineraries.
