Impact in New York as Hurricane Ernesto disrupts maritime operations

Posted on August 19, 2024

Hurricane Ernesto is wreaking havoc in the Atlantic, forcing cruise lines to alter itineraries and disrupting maritime operations along the East Coast.

As the storm builds strength, meteorologists at Weather Routing Inc. are working tirelessly to keep ships and their crews safe.

“We have a yachting and sport fisher and sailing division, and a commercial division that both work to save our clients’ properties and vessels,” said Jeremy Davis, director of Yacht Operations at Weather Routing Inc.

The team analyzes complex weather data to provide crucial guidance to vessels at sea, often resulting in last-minute changes for cruise lines.

Kyle Stockman, assistant director of maritime operations, noted, “It’s not uncommon for cruise ship vessels to change their itineraries based on weather conditions.”

Commercial vessels bound for New York and other ports are also navigating around the storm, potentially affecting consumers through shipping delays.

While Ernesto may not make landfall in New York, coastal areas could still feel its effects.

“People here in New York should always be aware of tropical activity,” Davis warned, citing potential for heavy rain, storm surge and high winds.

As Ernesto continues its journey, maritime experts remain vigilant, working to ensure safe passage for all vessels in these turbulent waters.
