IFA Flood Chairman Insists Dredging Required To Save Farmland

Posted on August 11, 2016

The IFA’s Flood Project Chairman insists that dredging must be done on the Shannon in order to alleviate future flooding on farmland.

Mayo farmer Padraic Joyce has taken over the role from Tom Turley, and says he doesn’t see a lot in draft CFRAM flood management plans for farmers.

Draft flood plans for the Shannon and South Western River Basin Districts are currently gone out for public consultation.

However, the dredging of the Shannon from Athlone Weir to Meelick Weir is not being considered as viable.

Mr Joyce says rivers must be cleaned to allow for proper drainage of farmland.
