In response to recent comments made by recently elected U.S. President, Donald Trump, regarding the North Sea, Hull City officials have extended an invitation for him to visit the region. Trump’s remarks (made via Truth Social) which called for the opening of the North Sea to increased oil and gas production and a reduction in offshore wind energy development, have sparked significant debate within the UK’s energy sector.
As a leading hub for offshore wind development, Hull offers a unique perspective on the benefits of renewable energy, job creation, and energy security. The Humber region, home to key industry players such as Ørsted and Siemens Gamesa, has been instrumental in driving the UK’s renewable energy initiatives, with offshore wind now playing a crucial role in the nation’s energy strategy.
The invitation from Hull City Council and Humber Marine and Renewables invites Trump to witness first-hand the transformative impact of offshore wind development. Local officials and industry representatives are eager to engage in constructive discussions with Trump on the future of the North Sea, the potential for economic growth, and the importance of sustainability.
HM&R Director, David Laister, stated: “I’d like to invite Donald Trump, or a representative here in the UK, to come to Hull and take in Offshore Wind Connections 2025. He needs to hear what those ‘windmills’ have done for the economy, for our maritime heritage and for the region’s sense of purpose. I’d like him to understand the appetite for working in this clean, green sector from those at our schools and colleges, to sample the hunger to be part of a climate emergency solution.”
Hull remains committed to furthering the growth of the offshore wind sector, aiming to contribute to the UK’s target of achieving 50 GW of offshore wind generation capacity by 2030.
