The pace of work on the delayed Hulhumale’ Phase III land reclamation project has accelerated, with more than 30 hectares dredged out of the planned 63, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said on Sunday.
In a social media post, HDC confirmed that dredging is progressing rapidly with the deployment of two dredgers, including one recently brought in from the Netherlands.
The 63-hectare reclamation was awarded to Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMC) under the previous administration’s landlord scheme, which allocated plots from the Hulhumale’ lagoon.
The project was temporarily suspended last year after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a public notice halting dredging. At that point, 23 hectares had been completed. Work resumed on June 25, 2024 after the EPA permit was reinstated, but was again paused shortly after.
The government later announced that dredging would restart in April this year and be completed by July. However, the latest phase officially resumed on November 10, and by November 25, a second dredger had arrived to accelerate progress.
With two-thirds now complete, officials expect the remaining work to be finished within this month.
