Horseshoe, Lower Shaker Lakes’ Dams to Receive $4.1 Million in Upgrades

With the dredging of the “Duck Pond” wrapping up this month, City Council has signed off on improvements to the Horseshoe and Lower Shaker Lake dams.

The estimated $4.1 million project will again be handled through the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, but this time through its Stormwater Management Program, with no local match.

In addition to the dams, it will also include work on a new ancillary spillway at Horseshoe Lake, replacing the existing large “riprap” stones.

The redesigned spillway should help eliminate overland flooding across South Park Boulevard, City Planning Director Joyce Braverman noted.

There will also be repairs to the historic stone walls and foundation at Horseshoe Lake dam.

Over at Lower Shaker Lake, the work is mandated by an Ohio Department of Natural Resources to upgrade the dam, after some emergency remedial work has been done in recent years.

Also planned is new stone to be installed at the water’s edge at Lower Shaker Lake to fortify the leading edge of the dam there, Braverman said.

Both dams will have “voluntary” trees and brush removed, which NEORSD Watershed Team Leader Jeff Jowett described as trees and foliage that weren’t purposely planted.
