Horry-Georgetown Tech gets Marine Center boat building grant

In 2025, Horry-Georgetown Technical College will begin construction on a new Marine Center on Georgetown’s campus.

Southeast Crescent Regional Commission awarded the college with a grant to purchase new and advanced equipment for their outboard marine program and new boat building program.

Using the new equipment, students will be able to cut out and make any part of a boat using a computer numerical control machine.

The Georgetown campus of HGTC will be the only technical college in the state that offers both of these programs, according to Dean of Academic Affairs Brandon Haselden.
“Boating and fishing makes up a $6.5 billion economic impact to our state. So, we’re talking about a major industry and a major economic impact in what we do and in and out are our communities,” he said. “Basically, everything that the students are going to be covering is going to be related back to real world knowledge that they’re going to be able to apply in the manufacturing setting.”

In addition to using advanced technology in the classroom, Haselden said these classes will put them on top in a growing industry outside of the classroom.

According to Haselden, the new tools of various console materials, including fiberglass, will prepare them for their capstone project at the end of the semester making their own boat.
“Whenever you start talking about the manufacturing of the boat, there’s a lot of other areas. Plumbing, electrical, a lot of scenarios where most people would think that that wouldn’t be critical,” he said. “But there’s a lot of electrical skills that’s involved. How to run wires, basically safety guidelines with few lines and electricity and water and so forth. So, all of those skill sets too will be covered in this program.”
