Hoj Nordic completes tidal dredging work in German Wadden Sea

Posted on June 10, 2025

Danish dredging company Høj Nordic has completed a specialised dredging operation at a ferry berth in the German section of the Wadden Sea, as part of scheduled spring maintenance. It utilized the dredger Vilma Høj for this specific operation.

According to the company, they were tasked with dredging to a depth of -4.5 metres to ensure safe navigation and sufficient draught for ferry operations in the shallow and sediment-heavy waters. The area is known for strong tidal currents and rapidly shifting seabed conditions, which posed operational constraints.

Another constraint the company mentioned was that dredging operations were only permitted during the outgoing tide requiring thorough planning, flexibility, and precision in terms of timing and execution.

Høj Nordic said the work was completed efficiently despite the environmental challenges, highlighting the importance of local knowledge and technical competence in maintaining key maritime infrastructure in tidal zones.

The project forms part of regular dredging operations carried out in spring and autumn to counter rapid sedimentation in the area.
