HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Hilton Head Island’s beaches will undergo a major restoration project this year.
The Beach Renourishment Project will begin in June and take about a year to complete. This project will be the most expensive one yet, estimated to cost more than $40 million.
The goal is to protect the ecosystem and property along the beach.
Officials said this will be an around the clock operation that will progress at a rate of 200-300 feet per day and temporarily close about 1,000 feet of the beach daily.
Residents will be notified of the restricted areas in advance once a contractor is selected.
“It’s a commitment to resilience. The beach and dune system provide significant protection during storms and a wonderful place to recreate [recreation] for people who live here and people who visit,” said assistant town manager, Shawn Colin.
Contractors will ensure the safety of beach-goers by implementing control measures and signage that mark restricted and non-restricted areas.
