The Hilton Head Island Beach Renourishment Project, a critical initiative aimed at preserving the island’s shoreline, has experienced a delay in its start date. Originally scheduled to commence in August, the project has been postponed to mid-August due to adverse weather and marine conditions. Marinex Construction, the project’s executor, has begun mobilizing at Fish Haul Beach Park, with active construction anticipated to begin during the week of September 2. The project, valued at $47.5 million, is expected to be completed by May 2026 and will be conducted in three phases [1].

Construction Phases

Phase I, which includes the renourishment of Fish Haul Beach (approximately 50,000 cubic yards of sand), Pine Island (180,000 cubic yards + breakwater structures), and Port Royal “The Heel” (500,000 cubic yards), is currently set to start in mid-August. Phase II, focusing on the Central Island and South Island areas, is scheduled for November 13 to February 14, followed by Phase III, which will address Pine Island Breakwater Structures, with a tentative start date yet to be determined [1].

Community Impact and Wildlife Protection

To ensure safety during active construction, Fish Haul Beach Park will be temporarily closed for approximately five days starting mid-August, weather permitting. Beachgoers will be directed around active work zones via ramps and signage, with construction expected to proceed 24/7 at a pace of 200-300 feet per day. Wildlife protections are also in place, with activities monitored by consultants to safeguard sea turtles and migratory shorebirds. Dog activity is restricted in a small area adjacent to Fish Haul Creek Beach Park [1].

Funding and Management

Funded by the Town’s Beach Preservation Fund and Capital Improvement Program, with key support from tourism-generated Beach Preservation Fees, the project is engineered by Olsen Associates, Inc. and executed by Marinex Construction, Inc. [1].

Project Benefits

The beach renourishment project aims to preserve Hilton Head Island’s beaches, supporting the local environment, economy, and quality of life for residents and visitors alike. The Town of Hilton Head Island is sponsoring and funding the project, with Olsen Associates, Inc. serving as the engineering firm [1].

Public Updates

The public can stay updated on the project’s progress through the Town’s website, social media, and e-subscription service. Regular updates will be provided to ensure transparency and community engagement throughout the construction phases.
