Hearing on Summer Dredging in Toledo Set for March 29

Posted on March 20, 2018

The state’s annual hearing about summer dredging will be at 6 p.m. March 29 in Toledo City Council Chambers.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants to dredge 800,000 cubic yards of silt from Toledo’s shipping channel to keep it open for commerce this year. Toledo is the shallowest part of the Great Lakes navigational system and, thus, the most heavily dredged.

The Corps is once again seeking a permit to dump all of the silt it dredges back into the water, in a part of northern Maumee Bay outside of the shipping channel.

The 800,000 to 1.2 million cubic yards of silt normally dredged is roughly enough to fill Toledo’s tallest skyscraper three times. The work is not to begin before July 1.
