An application for further dredging off the Port of Hay Point is before the State Government.
North Queensland Bulk Port submitted the application to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority for a permit to conduct maintenance dredging works to remove about 350,000m³ of sediment.
A company spokesperson said it would “restore berth pockets and departure paths to their design depths”, due to sediment build up since 2010, when the last dredging was carried out.
BHP, which operates Hay Point Coal Terminal at Hay Point, would also benefit.
A spokesman for BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) said: “We are aware NQBP has submitted applications to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority for permits to undertake maintenance dredging at the Port of Hay Point.
“We are supportive of these permits as they will ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Port, in accordance with the Queensland Government’s Maintenance Dredging Strategy.” A spokesperson for GBRMPA confirmed it was assessing a permit application.
