Hawaiian Dredging Breaks Ground on First Honolulu Metro Station

Posted on March 17, 2016

USA: Construction of the first Honolulu Rail Transit station officially started with a groundbreaking ceremony on February 25. Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit and contractor Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co were joined by city and state officials at West Loch station.

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co is building West Loch under a contract awarded in June 2015 that also includes Waipahu Transit Center and Leeward Community College stations.

Construction of the 32 km elevated light metro line started in 2012. The first phase between East Kapolei and Aloha Stadium with nine stations is scheduled to open in 2018. The eastern half of the route, from Aloha Stadium to Ala Moana Center, will add 12 stations when it opens in 2019.

A fleet of 20 driverless four-car trainsets were ordered from AnsaldoBreda (now Hitachi Rail Italy) in 2011.
