HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) – Two major pier projects are underway in South Mississippi.
Work has begun on a $1.8 million project at the Courthouse Road Pier in Gulfport.
Crews are building a new walkway that will feature a gazebo.
Officials are also working to create a more natural drainage zone. As part of that effort, crews have installed a concrete diversion box near the seawall to help capture debris and litter before it washes into the Mississippi Sound.
The project is being managed by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
Work is expected to be completed within the next couple of months.

Repairs are also underway on the Coliseum Pier in Biloxi, the longest pier in Harrison County.
Workers are replacing rotten boards and handrails on the 894-foot pier. This work is part of regular maintenance by the city’s Ports and Harbor Division.
The work is expected to be completed by early next week.

The Sand Beach Renourishment Project in Harrison County is in its final stages of design and engineering.
The project includes dredging about 2 million cubic yards of sand from offshore borrow areas. The goal is to rebuild the beach to its original shape, extending about 230 feet past the seawall.
Once the sand is in place, crews will also plant dune vegetation to help stabilize and protect the area.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will take the lead on the project, with dredging work expected to begin by January.
